Port Dalhousie is a community where old and new merge together into something special.

Located along Lake Ontario, Port Dalhousie is an eclectic community that celebrates its roots while embracing a modern, relaxed sensibility.

As one of St. Catharines’ most historical communities, the area was once dependent on the shipping industry along the Welland Canal. Many of the people who lived in Port Dalhousie’s residential neighbourhood were shipbuilders, canal workers and sailors.

Port Dalhousie contains many beautiful homes that are original to the area. If taking a stroll through the neighbourhood, you’ll still find homes with the earlier architectural styles of the 19th and 20th centuries.

There are historic brick homes that have been tastefully updated to reflect today’s trends. You’ll also see cottages that retain the charm of years gone by with their inviting front porches. It’s a unique area of St. Catharines that’s almost reminiscent of a coastal town.

There’s perhaps no better example of Port Dalhousie’s maritime vibe than its Inner Range Lighthouse. This iconic building is appreciated by locals and tourists alike, with its cedar shakes and unique octangle shape that is rare for lighthouses located along the Great Lakes.

The lighthouse was restored in 2002 by a community group that values the preservation of local history.

Just a short drive away is another famous landmark: The Lakeside Park Carousel. Despite being over a century old, the carousel continues to bring smiles to everyone who takes a ride on one of its hand-carved wooden animals. Even its admission price is old-fashioned at 5 cents a ride!

For all its history, Port Dalhousie isn’t afraid to change with the times. The area is now home to young professionals, families and seniors, making it a diverse community that’s wonderful for everyone.

In recent years, new residential projects have brought condos to the waterfront. These developments respect Port Dalhousie’s history through their exterior design while incorporating modern finishes for luxury living.

The area also offers activities for any age. For outdoor lovers, there’s cycling or hiking on the Waterfront Trail along the beaches of Lake Ontario. For foodies, Port Dalhousie offers fantastic dining options.

You can enjoy a pint at one of the local pubs or try the international options at one of the area’s bistros or restaurants. And if you love supporting local, you’ll appreciate the many independent stores where you can find clothing, jewellery and antiques.
